One in Five Bulgarians Lives in Poverty, Children Hit Hardest

According to National Statistical Institute (NSI) data for 2025 on poverty and social inclusion, 21.2% of Bulgarians, or around 1.37 million people, live below the national poverty line, set at 866.67 leva per month per person. Although this represents a slight decline compared with 2024, the report stresses that household pressure remains significant, particularly for families with children. The data underline a clear social pattern summed up as: “ Poverty in Bulgaria has a child’s face.”
