WASHINGTON, Nov. 5 (UPI) -- The Senate Committee on Indian Affairs is considering extending federal recognition to the Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina, whose members have been denied access to federal benefits and services. Senate Bill 107, known as the Lumbee Fairness Act, would ensure eligible members of the Lumbee Tribe receive all the entitlements provided to other tribes that are federally recognized, reversing provisions of the 69-year-old Lumbee Act of 1956.
