Menachem Begin and Anwar Sadat did not, with great fanfare, sign a cease-fire in 1979. They signed a historic peace treaty. The American Revolutionary War was not ended by the Cease-Fire of Paris, nor do we speak of the Cease-Fire of Versailles. Yet cease-fires—vague, temporary, and ill-defined periods in which combatants sometimes retreat to their corners and sometimes just keep punching—are the best we can do when it comes to the Middle East today. There is no great mystery here for anyone
