INS: Number of children under 18 down by 886,800 over 20 years; child poverty remains major issue

The number of children under the age of 18 with registered domicile in Romania stood at 3.669 million as of 1 January 2026, down by 886,800 over the past 20 years, according to a press release issued by the National Institute of Statistics (INS) on Friday. According to INS officials, the decline was caused by both lower birth rates and international migration, while the share of minors in the total domicile-based population fell to 17% at the beginning of this year, agerpres reports.
