This column examines whether a promise to expand welfare for some mothers in Germany could swing short-term electoral support. The campaign pledge boosted the party’s vote share by over 12 percentage points among voters who stood to benefit. However, this boost vanished soon after the pledge was fulfilled. Voters may respond to credible promises of financial benefits, but their allegiance is temporary and does not
