How did Brexit impact the UK labour market? This column uses synthetic differences-in-differences to estimate how Brexit changed the trajectory of foreign-born employment. The authors find that ending free movement and introducing a new immigration system in 2021 led to a modest rise in the number of foreign-born workers in the UK, but a dramatic shift in their countries of origin. Brexit was expected to impact the UK economy through two main channels: trade and immigration. There have been
