Ellen Fairclough became the first woman appointed to a federal cabinet position by John Diefenbaker in 1957. The Progressive Conservative MP served as secretary of state, became the minister of citizenship and immigration the following year and served as Canada’s first female acting prime minister for two days in February 1958.
