As it does every year on the anniversary of the terrible Hanshin Awij, or Kobe earthquake, which occurred on Jan. 17, 1995, killing more than 6,000 people, causing destruction and ruin, a festival of illuminations is held in the Japanese city. The city, which has risen from the rubble and become a symbol of strength and determination, is illuminated thanks to installations created by Italian artisans.
