Officials Warn of Sexually Transmitted Ringworm Outbreak: What to Know

A statewide advisory for Minnesota has been issued for the “largest known outbreak ” in the country of a sexually transmitted form of ringworm. The Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) said the outbreak, caused by the fungus Trichophyton mentagrophytes genotype VII (TMVII), has resulted in more than 30 confirmed or suspected cases reported in the Twin Cities metropolitan area since July 2025.
