In 1938, UK Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain thought he’d achieved “peace for our time” and avoided a war by allowing Adolf Hitler to take over the Sudetenland. Hitler, of course, continued to push into Europe, and World War II followed less than a year later. Now, as Trump floats the idea of ceding Ukrainian territory to Russia, we must remember history’s lesson– that appeasing a dictator is rarely a strategy for success.
