Syria has begun the first trials of former President Bashar al-Assad’s allies. Assad, who fled to Russia in 2024, will be tried in absentia. Other regime figures are facing charges in Damascus for their roles in brutal crackdowns on dissenters and atrocities committed during the country’s 14-year civil war.
