Magnitude-7.0 quake hits Taiwan, tremors felt across island and as far as Hong Kong

A magnitude-7.0 quake struck Taiwan late Saturday (Dec 27) night, with its epicentre about 30km off its northeastern coastal city of Yilan. The quake struck at a depth of 73km and tremors were felt across the island and as far away as Hong Kong. This is the biggest quake to hit the island since April 2024, when a 7.2-magnitude earthquake struck Hualien county, killing 19 people and injuring more than 1,000 others.
