On this day in 1957, Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, Luxembourg, and the Netherlands signed the Treaties of Rome. They laid the foundations for today’s European Union of 27 Member States. On this day last year, the European Union inaugurated Villa Europa, our new embassy in Rome, to foster and further strengthen our diplomatic relations with the Holy See, the Sovereign Order of Malta, the United Nations Organisations in Rome (FAO, WFP, IFAD) and with the Republic of San Marino.
