PECHENIHY, Ukraine—Pechenihy is a village of bombed-out homes and drab, Soviet-era mid-rise apartments amid pine forests and fields of black, fertile soil. At the beginning of the war, Russian forces occupied the settlements across the river from Pechenihy.
