Several European countries have criticized Israel over a proposed bill that would expand the use of the death penalty. Dutch Foreign Minister Tom Berendsen said Monday the Netherlands would join a public statement by Germany, France, Italy and the U.K. expressing “deep concern” about legislation that will “significantly expand the possibilities to impose the death penalty in Israel.” Capital punishment exists in Israel for exceptional cases such as war crimes or crimes against the Jewish people
