Memorial lecture on 1959 peace laureate Philip Noel-Baker
Raluca Maniță
Peace laureate Philip Noel-Baker was by any measure a renaissance man for the 20th century. Fluent in seven languages, a successful Olympian, a close friend of Fritjof Nansen, a key player in the early years of the League of Nations, the first Professor of International Relations at the LSE and the author of several books on disarmament. Yet today he is a virtual unknown. How and why has this happened? And why is it important for us to remember the life and times of this ‘fighter for peace’?
