In 1843, Karl Marx  said  religion was the opium of the people, and in 1955, Raymond Aron  said  Marxism was the opium of the intellectuals. Aron’s formulation was later updated in the 1973 Lindsay Anderson film  O Lucky Man!  to “Revolution is the opium of the intellectuals.” All three formulations were plausible, but today revolution would, I think, best be described as the opium of the MAGA right.  Political scientists struggle to attach a descriptive name to all this.  This aspirational
