(23 Aug 1994) STORYLINE: Record numbers of refugees continue to pour out of Cuba despite a get-tough policy that refuses them entry into the United States, a Coast Guard spokesman said on Tuesday (23/8). United States officals report 2,548 Cubans were plucked from makeshift rafts and boats in the waters of the Florida Straits on Monday, setting a new single-day record for rescues since the 1980 Mariel Boatlift. A departure point for many rafters is Cojimar, a coastal town outside Havana. shows:
