Deadly landslide strikes militia-held mining site in DR Congo | AFP

A series of landslides strikes a militia-held mine in the Democratic Republic of Congo, burying people alive and setting off a desparate search. The accident hit Rubaya, a key mining town responsible for about 15 percent of global coltan output, the ore from which tantalum is derived for use in modern electronics. Rubaya has been under M23 control since April 2024. The resource-rich eastern DR Congo, ravaged by three decades of conflict, is believed to hold signigicant reserves of coltan ore.
