The DNA of one of the world’s greatest artists and inventors, Leonardo da Vinci, has been extracted from one of his works after scientists recovered what could be tiny traces of the man himself from a red chalk drawing called Holy Child. Microscopic Y-chromosomes scraped from the artwork have been compared with DNA from a letter penned by one of Leonardo’s cousins and appear to belong to a genetic grouping of people with a shared ancestry in Tuscany, where Leo was born.
