With the news that President Donald Trump has taken a sudden interest in renaming the Department of Defense the “Department of War,” one has to wonder: Was the U.S. military really in need of some kind of hypermuscular rebrand? If anything, Trump’s renaming stunt should remind us of a basic fact: The United States is a country that makes war as a matter of course. Out of nearly 250 years of history, it has been at peace for less than 20 . The label “defense” was a useful mask for this reality.
