The number of people killed by avalanches in Europe almost doubled in the winter of 2025-26, climbing to 136 from 70 the previous winter, according to data released by the European Avalanche Warning Services on Wednesday.     Italy was the hardest hit, with 38 avalanche deaths last winter, followed by France with 32 and Austria with 30.     The deadliest avalanche was one that hit a group of mountaineers at Cima Vertana, in Italy, on November 1, claiming five lives.     It is necessary to go
