A new study from Dalhousie University predicts a net loss of 4,000 restaurants across Canada in 2026 due to rising costs and changing consumer habits. CTV’s Kimberley Johnson speaks with Al Ayoub, owner of Al’s Diner in Ottawa, who says surviving 36 years in business has never been harder. Researcher Sylvain Charlebois notes that 41% of restaurants are operating at a loss as diners cut back on alcohol and appetizers.
