Syria announced that its army had begun to withdraw from violence-hit Sweida on Wednesday (Jul 16), following a wave of Israeli strikes on the Syrian capital Damascus and a United States call for government forces to leave the majority-Druze southern city. Nader Hashemi, associate professor of Middle East and Islamic politics at Georgetown University, speaks to CNA’s Asia First about what Israel is trying to achieve with the strikes and why the US has been outspoken over the clashes.
