The politically powerful ultra-Orthodox parties have won exemptions for their followers to forgo military service and instead study in religious seminaries. But with Israel having to maintain simultaneous military presence in Gaza, Lebanon and Syria, in addition to fighting a war with Iran, the country is facing a shortage of soldiers.
