Mothers with care proceedings die at 21 times the rate of other mothers

First-time mothers whose children go through family court care proceedings in England are 21 times more likely to die within 10 years of having their baby compared with other mothers, a new study by UCL researchers finds. The research, published in the Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health, used anonymised data from NHS hospitals in England, the Office for National Statistics and Cafcass, relating to 2.7 million mothers with a first live birth between 2007 and 2017.
