The new HBO Max series brings director Andy Muschietti back to America's worst small town to explore the cycle of Pennywise carnage that precedes the events of It: Chapter One and It: Chapter Two, expanding on the Derry town history passages in Stephen King's novel. Though the premiere suffers some of the issues of Muschietti's film adaptations, Welcome to Derry's first hour largely succeeds in setting up a disturbing and exciting horror story for the small screen.
