Retail trade up in May, with hints of consumer caution amid fiscal uncertainty

Romania’s retail trade turnover (excluding motor vehicles and motorcycles) rose by 3.5% in the first five months of 2025 compared to the same period last year, according to seasonally and calendar-adjusted data from the National Institute of Statistics (INS). The growth was mainly fuelled by increased sales of non-food products and fuel. In raw (unadjusted) terms, retail turnover advanced by 2.6% year-on-year during January–May 2025.
