The Romanian-Belgian duo Irina Begu/Yanina Wickmayer on Wednesday advanced to the second round of the women's doubles event at the French Open tournament, the second Grand Slam of the year, after defeating Kimberly Birrell (Australia)/Harriet Dart (Great Britain), 7-6 (7/5) 3-6 6-2. Begu, 34, and Wickmayer, 35, both alternates, prevailed in two hours and 27 minutes.
