The recent mission to St. Helena by Consul of Italy in Cape Town Giulio Mignacca, who visited the island from January 24-27, 2026, renewed and enhanced the historical ties between Italy and the South Atlantic archipelago, with particular reference to Liguria and Tristan da Cunha. On October 3, 1892, the pole brig 'Italia,' coming from Scotland and bound for Cape Town with a cargo of coal, was struck by a fire in the hold and wrecked near Tristan da Cunha, a tiny island in the South Atlantic.
